Campaign for Real Ale

Rural pub of the Year Presentation 2016

Saturday 9 July 2016

On Saturday 9th July CAMRA Kernow the Cornwall Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale had the pleasure to present The Star Inn at Vogue, St Day Cornwall CAMRA Rural pub of the Year award for 2016. This is a great achievement as the Star Inn was also previously awarded Cornwall CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2014.

The licensees Mark and Rachel Graham who run the very diverse Punch Tavern pub have made this pub the heart of the local community. They regularly serve six interesting real ales which are mainly local alongside several ciders. The pub serves good value home cooked food which is locally sourced and holds regular taster evenings.

The Star Inn is located on the main road form Redruth to St. Day. It has a large car park and grassed children’s play area which is regularly used for music and real ale festivals. One of the unusually features of the pub is the hairdressers which is open Tuesday to Saturday. The Star Inn houses a library and is also a meeting place for sports teams and local societies.

Gwennap Pit which is an open air amphitheatre, is less than half a mile away from the pub was and still is a place of worship for Cornish Methodists. John Wesley preached there over 200 years ago. In 2006, Gwennap Pit became part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, popularly known as Cornish Mining.

The Star Inn was inspected by CAMRA members and was scored on the quality of real ale, atmosphere, décor, community focus, service and sympathy with CAMRA aims. The Star Inn ticked all of the boxes and more to become CAMRA Kernow Rural Pub of The Year.

There was a good turnout of CAMRA Kernow members on the day and on behalf of CAMRA Kernow I would like to thank Mark and Rachel plus their team for their kind hospitality as a great day was had by all.
