- St Austell Brewery Celtic Festival
Friday 28 November 2025
On Friday evening 21 November, before the big day on Saturday, St Austell Brewery ran a quiet evening for customers after the trade session. Quite a few Cornwall CAMRA members took advantage of this and tried a variety of the 56 or so cask beers on the top bar and music bar, which included non-Celtic-country breweries this year.
Brewing Director George Young gave a speech to explain that the festival was in support of the St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust which supports individuals and good causes.
She then proudly brandished the cup awarded to St Austell Brewery by CAMRA for winning Champion Bottled Beer of Britain in 2025 for Proper Job, 5.5% ABV.
Not bad out of over 2000 bottle-conditioned (live beer) ales across the whole UK. Something to be very proud of.
Each successive winner is engraved on the base.
After the speech, we got on with the serious business of drinking the beer, discussing the beer and doing a few tastings for next year’s competition.
Cheers, Steve Barber

.
Lewis Elliott and Richard Hickman of Penzance Brewery Co. with their awardPenzance Mild has been named the Champion Beer of Britain 2025 The award is a huge win for the Cornish brewery, putting both the team and their traditional dark mild in the national and international spotlight. The competition takes two years to complete, with blind tastings across local, regional, and national rounds by expert judges and CAMRA members. Lewis Elliott and Richard Hickman of Penzance said:
“It’s quite overwhelming. I'm really glad the style has come back. It’s down to the founder of our brewery Peter Elvin and his nephew Rob, who showed me the ropes. I can’t believe we are here right now, it’s mad!” CAMRA's Awards Director, Gary Timmins, added: “I’m over the moon for Penzance, with Mild being a deserving Champion Beer of Britain. From CAMRA members nominating their favourites, through to those tough regional rounds, to the final panel of judges, this is a vigorous and fiercely independent competition, and Mild has come out on top.
“I hope everyone will join me on the Great British Beer Festival floor where you can try all our final twelve beers, each one is top quality, and each brewer deserves a congratulations in their own right.” St Austell’s Proper Job also secured Gold in the Champion Bottled Beer of Britain category, a fantastic day for Cornish beer.
